LABOUR DAY CELEBRATION
MEETING OF PETONE COMMITTEE. A well-attended meeting of the Petono Labour Day Carnival Committee wan held on Thursday night. Mr. J. W. M'Ewan presided, and the following friendly societies were represented:—Foresters, L.0.L., Druids, Oddfellows, Rechabites. Buffaloes, and Hibernian. The'town clerk advised that the Borough Council had granted the committee the uso of the Recreation Ground for tho purpose of holding a sports carnival on Labour Day. The programme of events was formulated, and the following committees wore appointed Finance, Messrs. Kearney (convener), Rose, Reid, Mesdames Coulston, Phillips, and Rose; procession, Messrs. Scholefield (convener), Kerr, Money, Churchouee, and Edwards ; adults’ sports, Messrs. Edwards (convener), Kearney, Short, Rodger, and Spurr; children's sports, Messrs. Churchouso (convener), Money, Scholefield, W. Holgate, Kirkwood, and’Greenfield; social, Messrs. Reid (convener), Williams, Rose, Walters, Kearney, Rodger, Eason, Dooble, Hume.
It was decided to relegate the questions of the baking competition and tho baby show to a meeting of ladies, to be convened for Tuesday afternoon next, and the' secretary was instructed to write to Dr. Platte-Mills and Mrs. Preston with a view to procuring their services as judges for the baby show.
Tho Petone Ladies' Miniature Rifle Club will be asked to conduct a shooting gallery on the ground. The meeting adjourned for a week.
