LADIES’ HOCKEY
TOURNAMENT AT PALMERSTON WELLINGTON WELL UP IN SECTION B ■ By Telegrauh —Press Association. Palmerston North, September 16. The ladies’ hockey tournament was continued in misty rain. The defeat of several leading teams was largely attributable to the greasy statp of tho ground. Results:— Section A.— Wairarapa (2) beat Poverty Bay (1); ALana.wa.tu A (3) beat Taranaki (1); Wanganui (3) beat Feilding (1); Hawke’s Bay A, a bye. Section B.—Atari borough (3) beat Hawke’s Bay B (2); Alanawatu B (2) drew with Nelson (2); Otago (2) beat Auckland (nil); AVellington, a bye. Tho defeat cf Poverty Bay, a previously unbeaten team, was not a groat surprise. Wairarapa played magnificently, and deserved their victory. Miss Bradley and Mrs. Cadwallader scored for Wairarapa, and Aliss Hill for Poverty Bay. Taranaki’s chances were favoured against Alanawatu A, and the splendid play of Aiauawatu brought about Tarnki’s defeat. Aliss Hendrickson scored for Taranaki, and Alisses Green and Hobbs (2) for Alanawatu. AVanganui were up against a solid proposition in Feilding, and only defeated the latter after a hard fight. Individual play characterised tho game._ For Feilding Aliss Ellcrman scored, AHsses Parrett and Brookes being the, scorers for the winners. Alarlborough were lucky to defeat Hawke’s Bay, as the latter had the better of the early play. Misses Scott and Rood notched scores for Hawke’s Bay, while Alisses Fairweather and Lewis (2) compiled points for the victors. Tho match between Nelson and Alanawatu was scraggy, and attracted little attention. Soon ‘after play commenced, Aliss Ingham received a severe blow on the face and left the field. For Alanawatu Alisses Alackenzie and Thwaites -scored, and Aliss Al'Lauchlan equalised for Nelson. The Otago team was fully extended in. an effort to defeat Auckland. Aliss Draffin did splendid work for Auckland, but the forwards failed to follow up. Misses Rochdale and Guest scored points for Otago. The positions of the teams are as follow: — Section A.- —Hawke’s Bay A. 10 points; Poverty Bay, 8; Wairarapa, 8; Taranaki, 4; AVanganui, 4; Alanawatu A, 3; Feilding, nil. '
