CONFERENCE HELD AT TAUMARUNUI. By Telegraph—Press Association. Taumarunui, September 15. A conference of delegates from chajnbers of commerce and other local bodies between Auckland and Wellington met here to-day. The following resolution 'was passed unanimously:—"That this conference reaffirms the principle of a simijkir conference of six years iago, that a national highway between Auckland and 1 Wellington be built by fho Government, and that the cost of construction be borne by the Government and local bodies in. equal shares, to be settled by commission: that a tax bo imposed on motorists for the upkeep of this and other roads, and that the national highway follow, roughly, the present Alain Trunk railway line.” The proposal in the Minister’s Bill is to divert the main arterial road from Te Kuiti to Waitara through New Plymouth to Marton, and this was strenuously opposed. The conference decided unanimously that the Minister of Public Works lie urged to have that portion of the national highway between Te Kuiti and Atarton included as a main arterial rond. and that, immediate steps b“ taken to link up the north and south. It was also agreed that a deputation of representatives of all local bodies and institutions interested wait on the Minister about October 15 to place the matter before him.
