CONSTABLE LOCKED UP IN EXERCISE YARD. From Our Own Correspondent. Palmerston North, September 15. A few, weeks ago a man named Charles Henry Roxborough w.as wanted by the police -on a.'charge ,of having stolen at Tokomaru a suit case and contents, valued at -617 155., the property of Charles Abbott. Early in September a constable from Shannon was in Palmerston North .and recognised the wanted man in the Square. Roxborough, when he caught sight of the constable, picked up n bicycle which was standing by and rode away. The constable commandeered another bicycle and gave chase, but the man, who is young and vigorous, was. too swift for him and got clear. He was eventually arrested' at Dannevirke and charged with the offence. He was brought to Palmerston North and was to , have appeared in the Court yesterday, in the meantime being confined in the lock-nn. While Roxborough was in the high-walled exercise yard attached to the cells, a constable entered the enclosure to do something, nnd as he had neglected to close the door ihe prisoner slipped out and bolted. Before leaving, however, he locked the door, thus imprisoning the policeman, and it was not until the member of the force had shouted lustily for some little time that his position became known, and he was released. An immediate search was instituted, hut as the man had got a good start, and has already proved himself to be both daring and resourceful, his’capture may be difficult. t ‘
