AERODROME AT LYALL BAY

COUNCIL WILL NEGOTIATE. The Nexv Zealand Aero Transport Compa xxy and tho Canterbury Aviation Company are to be informed that the City Council is prepared to enter- into negoriationo with them to permit the establishment of a temporary aerodrome on the Lyall Bay reserve, provided the corporation is legally entitled to do so, and provided, also (1)' that satisfactory guarantees are given against damage to ground, and as to its non-use xvhen it may be required for sport; (2) that the corporation is indemnified from liability for accident arising from ox- incidental to the use of the ground for the purpose of an aerodrome.

The Finance Committee has already granted permission for the reserve to be utilised temporarily as a landing-ground, but not for the erection of hangars or buildings. ' The Mayor (Mr. R. A. Wright, M.P.) explained to the council last night that the two companies were rivals. He was not in favour of anything that would drive off those who made use of the ground for sports at present, though he recognised that aviation deserved to bo encouraged. The council, should proceed to ascertain whether there would be any interference-with the use of the area as a sports ground. If there would, it would be "quite a different question.” A flatter received from the Sports Protection League urged the council not to grant the aviation companies any rights that would interfere with the purposes for which the reserve had been created. It was decided that the league should be informed of what the council had done.
