PROGRESS OF MANAWATU TOURNAMENT WELLINGTON TEAM’S LUCKY WIN By Telegraph —Press Association. Palmerston North, September 15. Heavy, warm rain to-day militated against outdoor games, but large crowds watched tho ladies’ hockey tournament, and were rewarded 'by keen, well-fought games. Following are the results: — Hawke’s Bay A beat Feilding by 5 goals to 1. Walrarapa beat Manawatu A by 2 goals to nil. Taranaki beat Wanganui by G to 1. Poverty Bay, a bye. Manawatu B beat Marlborough by 3 to 1. Auckland beat Nelson by 3 to 1. Wellington beat Hawke's Bay B by 3 lo 2. Otago, a bye. Feilding were aggressive in tho early part of tho game against Hawke’s Bay, but were- worn down by superior tactics. Misses D. Swann and I. Lean scored in the first spell, and again in the second halt'. Feilding’s score was made by Miss Elloram, and was the result of a brilliant effort early in the second spoil. Tho Manawatu team, which ployed such a splendid game against Poverty Bav on Wednesday, were defeated by Wairarapa. The Wairnrapa scores were gained bv Miss F. Booth and Mrs. M'Pliee. . , Tho Taranaki and Wanganui elevens were evenly matched, and a fast, ini® 1 ’" esting game resulted. Mi.wes Perrtt (A\ anganui) and Ke veil (Taranaki) scored for their sides. Taranaki were then awarded a penalty bully. The nui custodian and Miss Hendrickson (Taranaki) were selected for the battle. After a hard fight the last-named slipped the ball past her opponent, and with a hard shot scored the winning goal. Iho teams had turns of defending and attacking, but tho result was not altered. The win of Manawatu B against Marlborough was a great, surprise, as the local team had been beaten in ail their other matches. Miss Fairweather scored for Marlborough in the first spell, but Manawatu outstayed the visitors and scores were recorded by Misses A . Chustensen (2) and Thwaites. There was nothing brilliant m ■ the game between Auckland and Nelson. It was mostly a hitting competHion eonfired to the Nelson arsa.
