PREFERENCE TO EX SOLDIERS
A CHARGE REFUTED. In yesterday’s Dominion appeared a report of a statement made by Mr. 11. J* F. Aldrich, of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, to tho effect that returned soldiers wcro not receiving preference in employment in the Public Service. When soon respecting this charge, the Assistant Public Service Commissioner (Mr. P. Verschaffelt) said ho i-egrettcd that such) an unfounded and entirely misleading statement should have been made, they had been asked to give such preference, other things being equal, and that proluise had not only, been kept, but had been exceeded. Cases could bo quoted where returned soldiers had been kept on when other things had not been equal. AVith regard to tho two oases quoted by Air. Aldrich, tho files relating to the service and ability of the men were shown to our representative. Tho records, which are open to the perusal of anveno concerned, appear to indicate (hat tho parties referred to had nothing to complain of.
