Generally the items presented at the concert last night were good. The piano solo for girls and boys from 14 to 16 years ox age was most enjoyable, and the winner, Miss Vera Boesley, who did good work for the Bristol Scholarship earlier iin the competitions, played" the set piece, ''Am Lorely Eels,” with much feeling and technical ability. The judge was most complimentary when making the award, and expressed the opinion that Miss Boesley would be a yeally finepianfste. In the recitation ih character for youngsters, Sinclair Breen, the clever little girl who did so well last year, tied for first place .with Zelma Can-oil.-Both children did extremely well and pleased the judge immensely. Not very good were the vocal duettists. The winners, however (Miss Hannah and Mr. R. Smith), sang "Still as the Night" with a great\ deal of artistry. It was a pity that Miss Hannah was nervous, for she has a sweet, tuneful voice, well trained. No second prize was awarded in this section. The first pair did not choose a suitable duet. The operatic solo for mon was a well-contested number. Two of the contestants chose the famous “Prologue" from "Pagliacci," and the other an aria from "Faust." The winner (Mr. R. Smith) has tried hard throughout the competitions, and hit win was welt deserved. He has a voice that is not especially strong, but in the "Prologue” he infused temperament into his singing. Mr. .Oakey, the other chooser of "Pagliacci." did not become temperamental at any stage, and his high-notes were usually forced. In any case, the aria is usually set for) baritone, and Mr. Oakey’s voice is of a much lower register. The ladies’ impromptu speaking'did not produce anything outstanding. Ono lady was too keen on repeating her subject title, and the other left the subject altogether, and went off on a diatribe against the present economic system of things. She was not awarded the prize, which went to Mrs. O’Sullivan. Miss Bain (Auckland) was the other contestant, A good programme is promised for this evening.
