In a greenhouse at Kew Gardens (London) there are growing three new plants which may possibly prove of considerable economic value in the, near future. They belong to a species now styled Stevia relmudiana, which was discovered about 20 years ago by an Italian botanist, Dr, Bertoni, in Paraguay, where tho leaves are used by Indiana to sweeten tea, coffee, and other beverages. The leaves are remarkable for their extraordinary sweetness —said to be about 290 times, greater than that of sugar!—and they are easily prepared. If all the tales aro true a dozen full-grown plants should furnish a household with sufficient sugar for a twelvemonth.
