POLICE, CIVIL AND BY-LAW , CASES An elderly man named John Bourke was charged before Mr. F. K. Hunt, RM., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, with the theft of fourteen plugs of . tobacco, value,' 18s. Bd., the property of William D. Hill, 11 Adelaide Road; with attempting to steal 2s. from a till; with committing breaches of his probationary license, and with drunkenness. Ho was convicted on all charges, and was senfenced to one month’s imprisonment for the theft‘Of the tobacco, one month for tampering. with the till, fined ss. for drunkenness, and discharged on the other information. BREACHeFoF BY-LAWS Offenders against the city by-laws were dealt with by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. .For leaving a motor-car unattended in the street, L. L. Boille was fined 10s., and 7s. costs. J. W. Taylor was fined ss. and 7s. costs for leaving a motor-cycle in the street at night -without a light showing. For having no headlight on his motorcar, D.' C. Burton was fined ss. and 7s. costs, and) for having no tail light on his car. E. W. Hunt was similarly dealt with. ( For having no nu'mber on his motorcycle, 'C. Jeromson was fiyed ss. and 7s. costs. 1 L. Spiro was fined ss. and 7s. costs for having no headlight on his motor-car. Fpr impeding the ■ traffic in Vivian Street by leaving his I motor-car in such a position as to prevent a tramcar passing, L. Wi'kinson was ordered to pay 7s. costs. For having unregistered dogs in their possession, Frank Bacon, Henry F. Marsh, and Albert Morris wore each ordered to pay 7s. costs, and Mary M'Comisky was fined 10s. and 7s. costs. For nllowing stock to wander, Bowden and Charles Jones were each fined 20s. and 7s. costs; Thomas Rogers and Nora Ryan were each fined 10s. and 7s. costs; 'Sarrfh Archibald, Oliver Gardener,' John Hare, and Reginald Welsby were each fined ss. and 7s. costs. George E. Styles, a poultryman, was convicted of driving a horse and gig in Molesworth Street, and falling to keep as near as practicable tooths footway on the left or near side, and he was also convicted of driving tho vehicle without lights.
