TWO OFFENDERS SENTENCED? From Our Own Correßnoiidfcnt. Masterton, September 12. In tho Supreme Court to-day Roy Bateup and Roy Wilmshurst, who were on Saturday evening found guilty on two charges of cattle-stealing, were brought up for sentence. His Honour Mr. Justice Salmond said that the suggestion thaj: Bateup be admitted to probation could not be M.ken into consideration, for cattle-stealing was a serious crime and was not easily detected. He would, however, consider the fact that accused had not gone into the box and perjured himself, and that it was'his first offence Rateun Would be sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment in the Wellington Gaol. . With reference to Wilmshurst. His Honour said that ho would take ir.to consideration the jury’s recommendation to leniency on account of accused’s youth and low mentality. However, accused had not had any hesitation in going into the box and committing perjury by denying two written 'confessions and attempting to throw all the blame on to Bateup. Wilmshurst would be sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, to be followed by twelve months’ reformative treatment.
