A HINT FOR THE CIVIC LEAGUE

Will forty out of the fifty thousand donate 'I Is. each to the Civic League Fund? This would add JS2OOO to the fund. It is’all very well for one with £5OQg a year to say donate a day’s pay. Some now in employment may be out 'in a -week themselves. Personally, I assist a family, who, through sickness, haye not the bare necessities of life these hard times. By so doing I know exactly how and where the money goes. Now. Mr. Editor, what pare has Labour done to bring, the country to the state it is in? The aftermath of war leaves its trail of depression in all countries, but ■ here in "God’s Own Country” ' Labour compels the railways and others to seek coal in distant lands, paying outrageous prices for same—coals to Newcastle, as the saying goes. Thousands of pounds in excess of ordinary prices were paid when our miners were going slow. This money could have been, kept in the Dominion. The position to-day is thousands"of tons of imported coal accumulated : and on Friday last two shiploads of Now Zealadd coal lying in the ■ harbour, and no one wants it. An amusement tax was put on people during the war, why not put an unemployed tax on as well? Hundreds of pounds are spent weekly in Wellington alone on ' pictures. . If one wants amusement, let him pay for it. I, for one, am willing. Pictures are now Is. Id. when they used to be 6d., so another 3d. is neither here nor there, as the unemployed do not share in the extra sevenponce.
