LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAI MENT. (From Our Own Correspondent.) \ Palmerston North, September 10, Palmerston North is quite ep. fete, and will remain so for tho next Week, on account of the annual ladies’ cliampttmship hockey tournament being held here. Entries have been received from Auckland, Feikling, Hawke’s Bay (two), Manawatu (two), Marlborough, Nelson, Otago,-Pov-erty Bay, Taranaki, Wairarapa, Wanganui, and Wellington. The visitors, to the number of about 150, arrived on Friday, and in the evening they Were accorded a civic reception. Tho tournament will continue for eight days. It is being held, on the Sports Ground, which has been well' prepared, and the visitors are loud in their commendations of it. The'six games played to-day were all keenly contested, and while one or two were somewhat one-sided, play was none the loss interesting. Almost every team possessed good combination, and the public was treated to some excellent expositions of the game. Tho Poieity Bay players, last year's champions, si;ere> a treat to watch, Their/mutch against a. nippy Taranaki eleven was followed! with intense interest. Wellington outclassed Marlborough in every department of the game, their fast forwards working in thorough harmony, and shooting with exceptional accuracy.
