GRAND NATIONAL RACES

CONCLUDING DAY’S EVENTS LINCOLN STEEPLES TO STURDEE EXPLORER’S SYDENHAM HURDLES By Telegraph—Special Correspondent. Christchurch, August 13. The Canterbury Jockey Club’s Grand National meeting was concluded at Riocarton to-day. The weather was fine, but windy. The attendance was not so largo as sillier in the week, many visitors having left for their homes. The totalisator handled -272,047, as compared with J2)8,100 for the corresponding day last year. The seven acceptors all went to the post for the Hunters’ Hurdles, and the public made Pampalona a god favourite, while Birkenvale, Grange, and Ready were also well backed. Innisfallen set a fast pace down the back and looked like spread-eagling the field, but fie tired badly and Red Blaze headed him at the last fence, where the others were being hard ridden. Birkenvale and Likelihood put in good runs but could not get to Red Blaze, who won by a couple of lengths from Likelihood. Birkenvale was a head away. The winner was the outsider of the field, and paid a very big dividend. Fire Eater was a better favourite than Tigerland in the Aylesbury Steeples, which drew a field of four. The topweight went off with the lead, but he put in a short stride at Cutts’s and came down. This left Tigerland, in the lead and he won. easily from John Bunny and Jottre. Cantoris was the only scratching for the Heathcote Handicap and Dainty Step started « good favourite with Prince Martian, Arch Salute, and Pine Arch all well backed. At the start Prince Martian took charge, but with a couple of furlongs gone Link Up ran to the front and led till well down the straight. Then Prince Martian shot out and over the Inst 100 yards ho won decisively from Caveroek. Hiero was third, and then camo General Advance, Link Up, and Dainty Step. The lastnamed got a bad passage and was the last to make the turn for home. Tigritiya was the public selection in the °Styx Hurdles. At the start Phil May and Pariform showed out, but the latter soon fell back and Phil May went on by himself. He had a big lead down th® back and into the straight, but fell at the last fence. Master Boris was then left in front, and he won comfortably from Tigritiya, with Te Oro well baqk. Hyttus and Pariform were the next to finisli. Indus fell at the mile post, and his rider, Langdon, was badly cut about.

Hyttus, who had raced earlier in the day. was ■ the only scratching. for the Sydenham Hurdles, and the public backed the whole of the runners fairly evenly. At the first fence Crosswords fell, and passing the stand Explorer went Out wiilli the lead. He stood off at his jumps and gained ground at every fence. Down the back Mill o’ Gowrie and Demagogue tried to reach him, b,ut had' no chance. Multive moved up across the bottom and held the rest safely, but ho could not roach Explorer, who spread-eagled the field. Sir Fanciful, ridden out, headed off Demagogue for third place. Thrace and Whipcord were the next to finish. . The . weight anchored Gladful, who was in the rear tho whole way. Kauri King also ran badly. Coroglen was taken out of the Lincoln Steeples, and Waimai was made a better favourite than First Line and Sturdee. The first fence brought down Wai. mai, who failed to negotiate Cutts’s. Manawapango was in front for half a mile, but Sturdee then took charge and led for the rest of the journey. First Line was going well, but at Cutts’s the second time he nearly unshipped Kaan, who made a good recovery. Sturdee then went on and won by several lengths from First Line, with Manawapango 100 yards away. San. Sebaetian broke down' and was pulled up. The winner has been a useful horse to Mr. C. F. Vallance, and he looks like paying his way again next season. .Ro-yal Mac saw a short price in the Rcdcliffs Handicap, and there was also a good following for Corn Rigs and Treso. Cantoris was the first to begin, but at the end of a furlong Corn Rips had taken charge and he not headed again. Royal Mac ran into second place in the straight, but he could not sustain his effort and faded badly in the run to the post. Corn Rigs won by a leng3? ffom The Reaver, who headed Cantoris on the post. Lady Lucullus and Linton were the next to finish. There was very heavy wagering in the Selwyn Handicap, Corn Rigs and Prince Martian being withdrawn. The public went heavily for Mustard Pot, Weldone, Will Oakland and Fabrinado. Killowen and. Fabrinade set a fast pace from Weldone, with the favourite in the rear and Warlike tailed off. Racing onto the course proper the top-weight moved: up. Two furlongs from home Weldone shot past Killowen and Fabrinade, but shortly afterwards Walls brought the topweight along and ho van in a winner by a couple of lengths from Weldone. Three lengths away came Miss Muriel, ■who just got up and beat Killowen and Fabrinade, who finished together. DETAILS OF THE RACING. By Telegraph.—Praes Association.
