TIRAUMEA SETTLERS

RATES QUESTION STILL UNSETTLED. The difficulty regarding the payment of rates by the soldier settlers on the Tiraumca estate has not yet been (idjusted. Some of the settlers have refused to pay their rates, on the plea that their holdings are over-valued, and the County Council cannot recover the rates by legal process without the consent of the Minister of Lands. This consent has been withheld pending tho result of.Xv request made by the settlers for a revaluation of the holdings. This result is not yet announced. The Minister has made it clear already that ho does not intend to countenance any refusal on the part of soldier settlers to pay locjal rates. Non-payment of rates, as a 'matter of fact, renders the settlers liable to forfeiture of their holdings. It seems possible however, in view of what has happened elsewhere, that some compromise may be arranged with the consent of the County Council.
