MEETING OF COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Hutt County Council was held yesterday, Mr. .1. Barclay presiding. There was also present: Councillors Whiteman. Foley. M Kay, and Atkinson. , .... There was considerable discussion on a proposal to reduce the sal ar r county inspector (Mr. J. IV. Cudby) by £25 a year. The chairman said the pronosed move meant no slur on Mr. Cuaoy. It was felt, however, that the presen. conditions of financial stress made It Imperative for tho council to cut down expenditure. The chairman’s remarks were agreed to by Councillors Whiteman and M’Kay. They concurred in the statement that the reduction meant no slur on the official concerned. Councillor Foley strongly opposed the move. He thougn‘< te council had had no right -at n»l to entertain such a suggestion, especially In the case of Mr. Cudby. The chairman: “We hafve already had a 'blast from the bank regarding: our overdraft. Matters must be taken in hand.” The pronosaj was adopted with the one dissentient alien d"» mentioned. It was decided to reduce the rates at cartage paid to employees as follow: One man. one dray, one horse. ..2s. a day: one mrtn and a two-horse dray. oos. a day; one man. one dray and three horses, 38s. a day. Oomplaints to the condition of a road leading to h»s propertv at Pakuratnhl were made by Mr. Phillips, who waited on the council. Ke asked that necessary repairs be made forthwith, nnd that the road bo properly metalled, rhe council decided that a prrant nt would meet the case. Application tor the grant will be made accordingly. The inspector’s report on -county works wa-s adopted. It stated that repairs had been effected Pt- Kestern Hutt, Haywards, and on the Wairiri Road. New ironbark strinizeTW had bern placed In the Black Greek Bridge at Wallaceville. which was safe for years to come, with the exception of decking. Drains running through the Paraparaumri township had been cleaned, and the roads at the southern end of Munearoa Riding were at present being repaired. After a good deal of discussion, the council decided to give a month’s notice to the main ranger. The opinion was exnt'essed that in future each permanent roadman should be required to act as ranger in h a district. It was also decided to lay up the county metal crusher for n while, and to offer the engineer a •nosition as motor-driver at 15b. a day for work at the council’s section at Paekakariki.
