ORGAN RECITALS

Sir,—l notice 'by to-day’s issue v. The Dominion that organ recitals are to . be given, every Sunday evening with the object of popularising these recitals. I understand—and I think I am right in saying so—that Mr. Page does not receive any extra remuneration for these recitals. It would be exceedingly interesting to know whether his contract binds him down to work seven days in the week in democratic New Zealand, which justly boasts of its "awards” and limited working hours. Should such not be the case, why, then, is not Mr. Page compensated for his extra labours? Our city organist possesses that indefinable quality—loosely misnamed "artistic temperament” —which precludes any possibility of him putting up anything like a tight for his just and proper dues; and as in the past he has been subjected to a great deal of destructive criticism, a little of the constructive type might tend towards equalising the balance. The object of these Sunday recitals i» a very worthy one, which is welcomed by one and all as being a benefit to the community. But please, please don’t let it be a case of any means justifies the end. I regret exceedingly that belonging to that large category "servants of the public" I am left with no alternative but to designate myself as , VOLO NON VALEO.
