RUGBY FOR GIRLS

Sir, —As keen interest is being shown in the formation of the Wellington La- . dies’ Rugby Football Club, may I ba permitted through your columns to raiso a few- points in this connection. It has been suggested by the chairwoman nt the club’s meeting of last evening that the rules of the game could bo "modified” so as to make the game "more like Soo-, ter.” If the girls are going to flirt with the rules in this manner they might as well start playing Soccer and let the rougher game go hang. And how ridiculous is the fact that the girls are wasting so much time deciding on their wearing apparel when they are in no way prepared for wearing it. Do these girls really understand the hazards they aro taking in playing this game? I certainly consider it the duty of the promoters of the scheme to enlighten the prospective players in the dangers that lie before them, and to have them to understand that the game is not one that contains all pleasure and entertainment and no hard work While the game is the national one of this Dominion (for males), it must bo remembered that males aro more firmly built and less susceptible to hard knocks and rough treatment than females. A girl can receive as much harm from a slight knock as a man would probably suffer from a severe grilling "under ths scrum.” Besides the girls aro Qlready afraid that they will bo unable to play the game. They "don’t want aijone to see them practising,” and "they aren’t going to take too many chances.” Fancy entertaining the idea that they can' practice "without the moonlight"! Girls, a little light on the subject is the very, thing you need. When these girls realise that in "wearing the trousers” they are courting the ridicule of the public, they will be satisfied in trying tennis and baseball, even if the subscriptions of tennis clubs are so high.—l am, etc., FOOTER, r
