A MOTOR MYSTERY

DAMAGED CAR IN RIMUTAKA RAVINE NO TRACE OF OCCUPANTS There is something of a mystery attached to the finding by the police yesterday of an overturned" motor-car lyinst practically at the Ixttton of a. deep gully near the summit of the Rimufaka range. It lies in. a ravine about fifteen miles from Upper Hutt, on the Wellington side of ther road, ihe body resting on a jagged rock some thirty feet from the bottom. The bonnet and. wheels are smashed, and. have fallen to the bed of ihe gorge. Information about the car was received, yesterday by headquarters from the jMilice officer at Upper Butt, who inturn had been advised from Featherston. Immediately on receiving the message. Superintendent Norwood, with a smalt posse, left for the scene of the accident. It is regarded as strange-by police officials that the original informant made no statement other than telling of the accident and asking whether anything had been seen or heard of the occupants. He omitted to state how many persons were in the car when it left Featherston. Officials ventured, the opinion last night that possibly repair work was being don* to the motor, when about two.-and arlialf miles from the summit, and the occupants quitted the ear during the operations. From the number-plate, the police ascertained that the . motor-car . belonged to a Mr. Gallighan, but when a Dominion reporter rang Mr. Gallighan’# telephone number last night he was informed that Mr. Gallighan did not. own a. car. Up till a late hour last night no further information was available, and there was no " report of " snyone’s haring been injured in the vicinity of the accident.
