GOVERNMENT HOUSES
INSPECTED BY THE MINISTER
The houses that have been erected and are being erected by the Housing Department at Miramar were inspected yesterday by the Minister in charge of tho Department (the Hon. G. ,T. Anderson). The Minister informed a Dominion reporter subsequently that the occupiers of the houses generally appeared to lie well satisfied. A few' complaints . had been made and these the Department would try to meet, but the work of construction had been well done. Some of the complaints really arose from the fact that the tenants and. purchasers: have gone into the houses before they were quite ready for occupation. Lhe haste was due to the acute housing shortage in the city. The Minister said that the Department was erecting fences of posts and wire. The occupiers could plant hedges and so get very good fences in a few years. The erection of high board fences, which had been suggested, would have c* sB ? about X2O per house, and the aim or the Department had lieen to keep costs down as far as possible. With regard to the future, the Minister could merelv indicate that tn-e work of the Department: would be dependent upon the development of the financial situation. He hoped to bo able to proceed with the erection of additional houses.
