Tho Australians’ match against Northampton resulted in a hollow victory for the visitors by an innings and 484 runs. The county team was unable to do anything with the bowling of Armstrong. Ma.iley, and Gregory, and were nil out. in the first, innings for 69. and following on. made 68. Oldfield gave a fine exhibition behind the. stumps, being instrumental in dismissing five of the batsmen in tho first, innings, and having only two byes registered against him for both innings.

The weather was summery and hot when the Australians resumed their first innings, but Gregory added a. single only io his overnight score of 106, when he was caught by Woolley - off Murdin. Eoven for 539. His score included fourteen 4’s. Hendry partnered Ryder (44), and they added 50 before Hendry was bowled by Woolley. Eight: for 589. Oldfield helped Ryder to bring up the sixtn century, and at 619 Ryder was bowled just as he was nearing his century—93. Mailey failed to score, being bowled by Murdin, and the innings closed for 621. When Northampton came in Gregory and Armstrong bowled to Woolley and Adams. Four overs produced 8 runs, and then Woolley goCtwo 4’s off Gregory. Armstrong was difficult, to get through the field, six of his overs producing 4 runs. At 30. Oldfield caught Woolley off Gregory. It was a good one. He stopped the ball high up, and caught it as it was coming down. With one run added to the total Gregory bowled Adams, the ball causing the stump to turn a triple somersault. Two wickets were down for 31, and the remaining batsmen added 39, there being a procession from pavilion to wicket and back again. Ball was the only one to make a stand, and he managed to get to double figures. Armstrong, with the assistance of Oldfield and. the fieldsmen, disposed of the side in short order.

The second innings was a repetition of the first, only Mailey was the destroying agent. Gregory got three wickets, all clean bowled, for 4 runs. Ball and Haywood were the only batsmen to make any kind of showing against the bowlers.
