TEACHERS’ INSTITUTE

MEETING OF WELLINGTON BRANCH. A meeting of the Wellington branch of the Now Zealand Educational Institute was held last evening. The president (Mr. A. C. Blake) was in the chair, and there was an attendance of 130 members. Notification was received from Hie Education Board that there were al present seven teachers in Cantada waiting to come to New Zealand on the exchange system. The secretary explained that the Department was not granting any bursaries this year, but. every teacher going to Canada would be treated «s having applied for a bursary,, and that when there was more money in Hie Treasury it was hoped to grant refunds. '.riie chairman reported that Mr. W, H. Foster had consented io act as advocate in connection with appeals lodged by teachers against their grnuo. The chairman also reported that in response to inquiries received from the N.Z.E.I. the Management Committee had declined to express an opinion as to the educational value to school children of public musical competitions; nnd, further, that Hie committee was not favourable to the granting of exemptions from school work and marking absentees present in case of children taking part . in tho competitions.

During the evening a demonstration was given by Mr. !.. .1. Watkin, A.M., S.K (London), Wellington Training College, on the teaching of free drawing. A heart* vote of thanks was accorded Mr. Wntkin.
