SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP

BIG RACE ON SATURDAY AFTERNOON. Believing that Diek A rust is now tho champion sculler of tho world (Barry having failed to take up his challenge and cover his deposit after he, Barry, defeated Felton in Sydney last year), the race for the sculling championship of tho world will take place on Saturday between the holder and "Paddy” Hannan, of Blenheim. The race is creating a good deal of interest in Wellington, and it would not be surprising if a considerable number go across the Strait to see "the big row.” Roth men have, according to reports, undergone a thorough preparation, and both are said to bo fit to row the race of their lives. It must not be forgotten in computing tho chances of the two men that Arnst is twelve years older than when ho last rowed and beat Webb on the Wanganui River. It is nearly eleven years ago since Arnst beat the Londoner, Barry, on the Zambesi. It is said that the years take their toll, and youth will bo served, so that if Arnst —who in the interim gave up wager boat racing for some years—is able to beat a very much younger man in "Paddy” Hannan (who a few months ago easily defeated W. Fogwell over the same course |ie is io row’ on Saturday), he may lay claim to be an exceptional man. Tim risk in Hannan’s case may .be his "football knee.” This went back on him in his race with Webb on the Wanganui River, but apparently hold up in the Fogwell event. Still Hannan is a sculler of some experience, nnd ’has the fidvantage in age, nnd should make a good showing against his redoubtable opponent. It is stated that W. Fogwell intends to challenge the winner of the ArnstHannan race. CHALLENGER VERY CONFIDENT. By Telegraph—Press Association. Blenheim, June 8. Both Arnst and Hannan have eased up in their training operations for the world’s championship sculling race, and are doing just enough work to keep themselves fit and well for the day. To-day both rowed tho full course at a fairly solid pace. Arnst is very fit, and Hannan will have to be in good condition to beat him. The challenger is very confident.
