Entries for the Maiden Hack Race will close on Tuesday, March 8. Nominations fox - all events at the Waimate Trotting Club's mooting, to be held on Easter Monday, close on Friday. March 4.

This week will be a gala one at Wanganui. On Wednesday and Friday the annual race meeting of the Wanganui Trotting Club will be hold, and on Thursday and Satuxxlay the Jockey Club will hold its autumn meeting. When i field (B uck wheat—Auril am in a) and the Bardolph colt belonging to Mr. E. Riddiford, of 'Wellington, have recently been gelded. The programme for tho autumn meet;n;’ of tho Wellington Racing Cub is to be in exceptional one, and will contain no fewer than five races of £lOO9 oxover. The Thompson Handicap, one mile, will be worth £l5OO, and there will be a two-year-old handicap of £lOOO, with a Ost. 71b. maximum.

Tho locally-owned trotter Hiram Galindo is to be railed to Wanganui today in charge of his trainer, C. Skill, who will ride him in his engagements this week.

Mr. G. Peebles, the popular clerk of the course of the. Woodville Racing Club, has been a presented with a silver mounted hunting-crop by the Pahiatua Racing Club for kindly acting as clerk of tho course at their recent meeting,

when tho club’s official, Mr. A. Judd, was indisposed and unable to carry out his duties.

A feature of the Oamnru meeting last week was the succese of horses sired by Kilbroney. On the- second day the stock of the imported horse won three races on end.

Lately, owners have been oomplaining about the high fees charged by racing clubs for nominations and acceptances. Some clubs charge far more than others, and one offender in the South Island was recently boycotted by Riccarton trainers, with the result that the meeting was anything but a success. It is the general opinion that as a whole the clubs are doing very well, and every effort should be made to lighten the load of owners. The Racing Conference, it is contended, should go into this matter. and insist that fees for nominations and acceptances should in no case be more than one per cent, of the stake money. In this connection it is pleasing to record that the Waipukurau Club has decided only to charge owners one per cent, at its Easter Monday gathering, and all prize-moneys are to be divicled on a basis of 70, 20, and 10 per coat.
