WOODVILLE MEETING CUP WON BY PUNKA. By Telegraph. —Special Correspondent. Woodville, February 16. Tha Woodville Jockey Club’s Meettag opened to-day in line weather and with a good attendance. Hautawa was the best backed ot the runners in the Hack Hurdles, Signysian being withdrawn. Tornea and the favourite made tEe runniug~tf" the bottom of the straight, where Persian Prince and Transmission moved up. The two latter fought out the finish, Transmission getting the best of it in the last few strides. Hautawa was close up and Vigilo finished fourth. Backsheesh, Toa Taua, and Soldier’s Love were all supported strongly for the Sapling Stakes. Backsheesh jumped baeK at the barrier rise and lost several lengths. Toa Taua led Dissertation into the straight, where Kilreid, who had 261 b. overweight, came fast on the rails, and Soldier’s Love moved up on the outside. A good finish saw lhe light-weight assert herself, and she won by half a length from Kilreid. with Dissertation and Ton Taua in a line. Asterina was withdrawn from the Kualiine Handicap, for which she was the early favourite. After a long delay at the barrier the field moved oil well, but Murihiku and Paonui were squeezed out. Samarang led Early Dawn and Astinome into the straight, and the latter then went on and won easily from Murihiku. with Early Dawn beaten oil. Bonnie Briar was fourth. There were 14 runners in the Whanti Hack Handicap, Elcullus being made a great favourite. He was unlucky not to win, for he got of! badly and was giving the leaders a big start going down the back. At the half-mile Probate and Amber Tips were lending the field. At the bottom of the straight Elcullus and Spare Moment showed up, but the former failed to go on. Probate won nicely from Spare Moment, with Hepta again in a minor place. Sir Fanciful was fourth. Bonnie Heather, Kilgour, Bailand, and Matatua were taken out of the Cup, and Punka w'as made a short-priced favourite. Scornful and Ladify made the pace to the home turn, where the field bunched. The favourite then came up on the outside and won comfortably from the second favourite, Lovematcli, with Tenterfleld third and Scornful next. Nothing but Wamba (H. Gray) would go down with backers for the County Hack Handicap, but he was easily defeated by Birkie, who was in receipt of 91b. Kildee ran a great race under her big weight, and only missed second place by a narrow margin. Hallowroz was fourtli. In the President’s Handicap Matatua was the actual favourite, with Little River second choice. The latter got a very bad passage and finished out of a place. Matatua was in charge before the straight was reached, and stalling off a challenge by Hyttus he won comfortably by a length. Sir Fanciful was three lengths away, and then came Arch Salute. For the concluding event Passenger was heavily backed, but the fast pace and his big weight beat him. and though lie finished well ho could not get up. Miss Elva led for six furlongs, where Earth-., shine and The Digger took charge. In a good finish the former won by a head.
