HIDE AND TALLOW SALES

The fortnightly sales of hides and tallow were, held yesterday by the various

brokers. Mcssrß. Dalgety and Company, Ltd., offered a good catalogue of all classes to a full bench of buyers. Competition particularly for eood, sound butchers' hides showed an improvement on last sale, and prices for Btout ox hides Bhowed a slight advance on late rates. Cow hides. and best quality of calfskins Bhowed similar advances, but all poor, cut and slippy hides were neglected. In sympathy with the London market the tallow market showed an improvement of up, to 10s. to 12s.' p'or ewt. MesBTS. Levin and Co. report that prices were somewhat erratic. Buyers competed more freely than at recent sales, and all parcels in .good condition were in keen request at last sale's quotations. Inferior lines were somewhat neghjeted, buyers not Bhowine any disposition to operate on these sortß, whilst yearling, kip, and calfskins were without alteration. The commandeer for wool and shcepakins has been extended, and in consequence all wool and sheepskins, not including wool, of tho 1920-21 clipß, and not including freezing works' Blipe and freezing workß sheepskins, submitted to appraisement at brokers' stores before September 30, will be .purchased on behalf of the Imperial Government. At that date the commandeer of wool and Bh'eopßkius in the Dominion will definitely ceaße. As compared with the sales held during the laßt three montliß,. competition for tallow brightened and values in the majority of instances, according to quality, showed an improvement in sellers' favour. Messrs. Murray, Roberts, and 00. offered a catalogue of 1255 hides. Prices ruled par to a halfpenny per lb. higher than last sale on the average—a few stout lots of ox making exceptionally nood prices. The top figure was 193 d. per lb. for a/ stout ox hide, weighing 1121b, gross. Tallow was in better demand, but very little offering and only poor to medium quality. . Cut and damaged' hides and calfskin j were, difficult to quit. Tallow, ln sympathy, with cabled advices of rise in London, appreciated to the extent of 7s. 6d. to 10s. per ewt.

Mes'srs. Abraham and Williams, Ltd., state that, a full bench of buyers competed keenly .for all sound grades of hides, but neglected inferior sorts. Values were on a par with laßt sale, and tallow showed a much better tone which enabled the firm to dispose of most lines offered. The Wairarapa Farmers' Co-operative Association, Limited, report that good lines of sound ox and cow hides were Arm at last salo prices. Superior lines, ln some ca-scs, reached higher prices, out and slippv lines showed an improvement on liißt sale prices, and there was a good demand for tallow at increased prices.

The New Zealand Farmprs' Co-operative Distributing Co., Ltd., report that com-' potitlon for the various lines offered was much keener than at the previous sale, and prices in general showed an increaso of Id. to 2d. The tallow market was also much brighter, and prices realised showod a substantial increase over the previous sale.
