AMUNDSEN'S ARCTIC DRIFT
THE PROPOSED COURSE. Vancouver, August 9. Captain Amundsen sailed on Saturday. Hi 3 proposed course lies west of Wrangel Island, towards tlio New Siberian Islands, keeping in the open water until a favourable place is found to strike directly north. This will probably be in the vicinity of the place where De Long's ship, the Jeannette,' foundered in 1881. He hopes thu9 to gain the two years which the Jeannette lost in drifting from Wrangel to Jeannette Island. The Jeannette foundered about 200 miles north-east of the New Siberian Islaads in latitude 77 deg. 15min, N. and longitude 155deg. B.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
