CANTERBURY DEFEATED BY 29 POINTS TO 14

The meeting between the visiting English League team and Canterbury at Lancaster Park to-day provided a much better game than that between England and Xew Zealand on Saturday. Owing to tho trotting fixture, the attendance was only about 2000. Considering the rain that'hnd fallen for nearly three days, the ground was in wonderiully good condition, and the English backs were able to give more than a tasta of their worth. The way they throw the ball about was a revelation. Wagstaff, Uacou, and Stacey were in excellent form. The Canterbury forwards stood un to their task well, and all the bncks-iiotahly ttowc, Mitchell, urol Giiiney—were seen to advantage, J. heir tackling was a feature of the game. Though beaten, they were not disgraced. The game was open and fairly fast, but the visitors always had a bit to spare. England scored first. England were leading by 15 points to 3 at half-time. On resumption, Shadbolt scored for Canterbury as the result of fast following up, but missed with the goal kick. Howe took a pass trom Mitchell at hallway, and raced across, Watt converting. The ball passed through the hands o nil the English backs, and Bacon scored and converted. Wagstaff drew the opposition and passed to Davics, who passed to Stacey, who grounded the ball at tho corner. Bacon's kick failed. Tho movement was repeated a moment or two later, and again tho kick at goal fniled. Caiiterburv attacked and Howe got over, no goal resulting. Just before the end, Wagstaff nindo an opening for Bacon, who raced across, but Wagstaff failed to convert, and an interesting game ended in England's favour by 29 points to 14.
