Two days after tho departure of Iho Niagara from Honolulu, on her last voyage "to Vancouver, the death of a steward occurred in circumstances wnlch caused a goueral feeling of regret throughout the ship. Tho steward in question. William Bond, had charge of tho library, and was highly esteemed for his courtesy oy all the passengers who made uso of the ship's stock of books. He suddenly manifested symptoms of dementia, but not of a violent nature, and waa isolated under the care of two attendants. Takmg advantage of a brief absence of his custodians, ho locked the door of a cabin and jumped out of the porthole. A lifebuoy was at once thrown To Tilm and tho 'steamer circled round tho scape, but tho poor follow must have disappeared almost immediately.
