HUTT BOROUGH AFFAIRS

MEETING OP THE COUNCIL. The Lower Hutt Borough Council met last night, the Mayor (Mr. E. P. Eißhworth) presiding. There were also present: Councillors W. Mitchell, A. J..'West. TV. G. Mcldrum, W. B. .Hardy, IVilloughby Knight, A. Maoaskill, and E. J. Guinesa. Councillor W. T. Cotton waß granted leave ot absence, The town clerk, Nelson, wrote requesting support to a resolution'that the Minister of Education be informed that the Nelson Council did not consider the provision at funds for technical education came within the province of local bodies. On the motion of Councillor Macaskill, seconded by Councillor Mitchell, it was decided to give support to the resolution. A copy of a letter relating to (he gas dispute sent to tho.Petonc Borough Council by the Board of Trade, was leceivcd from the secretary of the board. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Councillor Macaßkill, it was decided to reply stating that Lower Hutt could not at present see itß way to negotiate in the matter.

A letter was received from the secretary, Wellington Hockey Association, with reference to ,playing grounds at liowor Butt for future seasons. It waß decided to hold over the allocation of the grounds until January of next year. _ Mr. K. Mason wrote claiming £28 2s. 10d. for interest on a deposit of £38 ss, 9d. made by his father in 1906, in respect to the tarring of footpaths in tho MasonConnolly subdivisions. The Mayor stated that the council was under no legal, obligation in the matter, After eome discuision, it was decided, on the motion or Councilor Wert, seconded by Councillor Ouines, that the Mayor. Town Olerlt, and Councillor Mitchell eo into the question, and if necessary obtain legal advice. Mr. M. Denniston suggested that the Railway Department be approached with a view to having the entrance to the station yard made mora attractive. Connoillor Meldrum thought that the Department could shift the manure Biding to Melline. On the motion of the Mayor, it was decided to inquire of tho general manager how far the Department would allow tho council to undertake the beautifying of the locality.
