SIDNEY HANDIOAPJTOK BY TOWNB. (Rec, August 8, 5.5 p.m.) Sydney, Aueust 8. The final heat of the Sydney Handicap was rowed on tho Parramatta yesterday in line weather, The result was: Towns, 4Ssec., 1; Short, Msec, 2; Felton, scratch, 3- Barry, scratch, 4. Towns won by two lengths, with a length between second and third, tlie same distance separating tho third ana fourth. Time, llmin. lljsec. There was a good start, Barry beinj siowosl oR the mark, the stern of his boat being caught in o whirlpool caused by the propellers of a. ferry steamer. Felton passed the umpiro a length ahead of the Englishman, but in the next few strokes they wero level. After passing Mortlako It war-apparent that the finish would b« between Towns, Short, Felton and Barry. Over the last 200 yards Short made a brilliant ellort to overtake Towns, but th» cjMTianipTon, although in his fifty-third yBKr, alra lie had rowed a hard race, wai able to spurt and cross tho line a winner. Felton and Barry were handicapped by the short distance, but tho result proved tnat the latter Is fast over any course. Although ho eased up twice passing rougn patches ho finished only a length behind Felton. In the 'Consolation Handicap tho flrst heat was won by Arnßt (2sco,), in llmin. ]4scc. Within a couple or hundred yards of the finish Arnst raced to the front.' He was not afterwards troubled, and Hashed over the lino like a champion.
