SEMES OP THEFTS BY A GIRL.
Mr. J. S. Evans, S.JL, presided over a sitting of the Juvenile Court, held oii Saturday morning. A girl, aged 14, was charged with committing a series of thefts. On June 30 she stole an overcoat valued at £5. Fourteen days later she appropriated a lady's woollen jacket and a pair of boots. On July 27 she stole a lady's hat, a pair of stockings, and lis. iu money. Three days later she stole another overcoat valued at £.1. On July 31 she stole a lady's handbag, gold watch and chain, gold medal, 4 brooches, ono gold nugget, one gold neck chain and cross, one gold b'nglc, and £o in money, and on August 3 she made away with two blouses valued at £o. The aggregate value of the articles stolen was .£37 lis. The girl pleaded guilty to all the charges and elected to be dealt with summarily.
Chief Detective Ward said tlint the girl had been running wild. She stole one overcoat from the Grand Hotel, other goods from the Albermarlo Hotel, and from the porches of schools she made away with garments. The girl was obviously beyond control, but this was the first occasion on which she had boon before the Court. The chief detective suggested that she should be committed to the Wellington Receiving Home.
Mr. J. Diueep, juvenile probation officer, agreed that the course suggested by the chief detective was the best for the girl. The Magistrate committed her to the Receiving Home and ordered the father to pay lis. to one of the complainants within a month, and £7 to another, at tho rate of 10s. a month after the lis. is paid.
