On the outbreak of the wnr. in common with all other kindred bodies, the operations of the club were immediately curtailed. Twenty-two of its members sailed for Samoa eleven days after war broke out, and participated in the capture of the first German soil taken by an overseas force. From then onwards members joined up with the N.Z.E.F. until only a handful of men were left-and they had, volunteered. The club struggled along in 1915 and 1916, and then active operations ceased until tho cramo recommenced in 1919-after the ,war. The committee records the fact, that the club attained its majority on March 25, 1919. Inasmuch as tho club only resumed active operations after war on that date, it was not possible to mark the occasion at that time. A meeting of those interested in the game of hockey was called at the Trocadcro, Willlß Street, on Friday, March 25, 1898. Mr. .T. H. 15. Coates occupied the chair. At .the first annual meeting, held in March. 1899, ten of the members resigned, and these, along with others, formed the-second club—the well-known United Hockey Club. Two of these ten were Messrs. W. E. Pearson and W. J. Organ, both of whom have done great work in the interests of hoci key. Mr. G. W. Davins. the well-known Karori player, waß also a member, but he resigned in 1899 and assisted in forming the Karori Hockey Club, linwdon Recre resigned in 1900 and formed the Victoria College Olnb. It is thus seen what an important part the club haß played in the game in Wellington. The club has had a very successful career. Whilst not. being a great cup winner, it has always been near the front, and has secured honours in all grades. Its member* have taken a very considerable part in the management of hockey in Wellington, and have done all roesiblo to forward the Interests of the game. Mr J. H. B.
