Mr. A. S. Adams, well known us a leader of the Prohibition movement, has been offered the office of Crown Solicitor at Dunedin in succession to Mr. Macgregor, who was recently appointed, Solicitor-General.

Professor Robert Irvine, M.A., who has been appointed .Dean of the Faculty of Economics at Sydney r University, is well known in Christchurch (states a Press Association message). Ho graduated at Canterbury College (junior tind senior 6ohclar rind Bowen prize essayist). Subsequently he was appointed to tho staff of Christ's College, but relinquished that position to take up tho headmastership of the Mooro College Grammar School, near Sydney. Later he becamo examiner and inspecting olßcor for the Public Service Board of New South Wales, and Pu'blie Service ,Com inissioner and chairman of the board.

The death 'of Mr. Edward Morris, senior, in his 82nd year, has removed another old and respected settler. Mr. Morris was born in Montgomeryshire, Wales, in 1839, and after serving hie apprenticeship he went to London, vihcre he entered the well-known undertakers' business of Hickman and Clives, as foreman. jailing health necessitated his retirement, ana ho 6ailed for New Zealand on the ship Strathnaven, _ arriving in Wellington in -1872, and settling here, established the well-known undertakers business. Some years later lie retired from tho business and went on the land, being one of the early settlors in tho Nireaha district, Forty-Mile Bush, where lie was very successful. Somo 15 years ago he returned again to Wellington. Deceased possessed ti kindly and sympathetic nature He leaves a grown-up' family of five sons and two daughters, 22 grandchildren, and five great-grandchild-ren. The interment will take flace at Sydney Street on Tuesdav. He will be laid beside his wife, who predoceiswl him ten years ago.

Mr. W. Mowbray, manager of Messrs Levin and Co.'s goods department, was a passenger to Sydney by the Manuka. Among the passengers for Sydney on tho Manuka were Mr. and Mrs. J. 13. MacEwani

The popular lecture to be given this evening under the auspices of the City CounciKfa entitled "Landmarks m Evolution." The lecture will be by Professor Kirk, of Victoria University ColIt will be illustrated by lantern slides, and will deal with some of the more,, important stagre in evolution that are not generally treated in tho popular books on tho subject.

Millar, New Zealand Rhodes scholar, will leave. the Dominion for England early in August.

Tho Rev. C. Blair, of tho.Petone Methodist Church, will leave fo-morrow for Tarannki, wliero lie intends to remain alxmt three months. Mr. J. Stonebouse, of Taita, left for Sydney on Saturday. Mr. W. Ij. Chapman, manager for Messrs. J. Ilott Ltd., advertising agents, accompanied by his wife, left on a business trip to Australia by tho Manuka on Saturday. Mr. Will Lawson, organiser for tho Marlborough Progress Committee, is nt present visiting Wellington, and will roturn to Blenheim on Wednesday.
