NAPIER PARK MEETING

BIQ STEEPLECHASE WON BY PENETON. (From Our Special Correspondent.) Napior, Juno 19. : The Napier meeting was concluded on Saturday. Bain fell when the day's raclug was in progress, and tho going got very heavy towards the end of the day The steeplechase events were both interesting races, and some fine jumping was Been. The totalisalor handled the sum of iiilS,Bso. making the total for the meeting JMS,64B, an increase of £9011 on last years total. Mosthenes was tho only withdrawal from the Meeanee Hack Handicap, tlio publio going heavily for I'ifc anil Drum, l'iro l'iro, and Miss Glron. Ugata who was very sore, was slow' to begin, and -Yankee ]ja.n moved oil in frout with the favourite. Tlio pair were still in charge at the ui--tance, but Sanacre limshcd strongly, und won by a length from xankee Dan, with Magistrate) close up. l'iro Piro was fourth. Ladogeur was at a very short price ,in the Hack Hurdles, for which Donnybrook was tho only withdrawal, Ladogeur ran on at the second fence, and Itaumanuwhiri led from Fr'ctty Bobby and Ethopiuu. The last-named took charge down the back, but at tho five furlongs he fell. Marshal Neil moved up at tho halt-mile, and ho entered the straight well clear, winning esisity by several lengthß. Pretty Bobby had to be ridden out to beat Kaumanuwhiri. Strangeways was fourth. King Albert, Etliopian, and Banogue fell. Hie winner filled third place on the opening day and tho pair that finished in frout. of nim were out to-day. All started in the Winter Oats Handicap, which was a big betting event. Heathersprig, Gold Kip, and Maloha were supported in that order. At tho start HeatherBprig took charge from Gold Kip ana Honey Bee. The positions were , the same into the straight, where Gold Kip moved up, and in a gopd finish ha woro down Heathersprig, anil won by a length. Arch Salute was a neck away, and then came Goldshine and Hookah. (Sold Kip stripped a much-improved horse to-day, and his connections wcra very conlldent ho would win.

Khartoum was tho only withdrawal from, the Park Steeplechase, leaving a field of thirteen. Maractotara. who had a change of jockcys, was favourite, with l'eneton second cnoice. At tho start tho latter, Foeman, Old Mungindi, and- Guanaco led a bunched field. ' With a circuit gone, tho iield had Etrung out with the etrong paco Bet by Poneton and Guauaco, both of whom fenced well. They were followed by Foeman and Old Mungindi. Down the back tho last time Harbour Light moved up, and Guanaco making a faulty jump at tin second fence from home Harbour bight ran into sccond place. He finished well, but had no chanct with l'eneton, who is tho more seasoned. Guanaco waß third, well up, and then came Old Mungindi., Manhattan, Notability, and Foeman fell. Peneton's performance was a good one, as lie was 111 front praotically throughout. Sturdco, Bill, and Pollyanna wore backed in that order for tho Hunt Club Steeplechase. The two former wcro always prominent, and with a mile to go Bowden took Bill to the front, and he was not again headed. He gayo a splendid exhibition of jumping and never put a foot wrong. Sturdee was well clear in second place, and Sandrlnghnm struggled home third. Pollyanna fell. The winner is bs. Moral (Tho Possible—Fair Neil) from MeWlc, and ho was the fittest horso in tho race.

There were only four runners in the Open Hurdles and Zola was a better favourite than GqJdstrcam, tho other pair being neglected. Tatimi led for six furlongs, when Zola rushed to the front, but at tile half-milo Ore Oro joined him, and was in front entering; the straight. He rail in an easy winner from tho favourite, with Tatimi several lengths away. Goldstream shaped badly. Tho jumping of the quartet was splendid,'and for the greater portion of the journey they wore in a bunch. Oro Ore was evidently well suited by tho heavy going as he shaped much better than on the opening day.

The concluding event was won by tho biggest outsider in the field. This was the Auckland-owned Walton,-by Foremost from Polycaste. The winner gave ,hie few supporters a record return for the North Island. Mosthenes was at a. short prioe, hut his weight beat him ip tho heavy going. DETAILS OF THE RACINC.
