EASTBOURNE COUNCIL
* The meeting of the Eastbourne Borough Council on Friday night was attended by the Mayor (Mr. F. H. Mather) and Councillors Bain, Bennett Fisher, Gaylcs, Green. Marquis, Pilcher, and Shortt. It was resolved to initruct tho council b architect iMr. W. M. Page) to report upon alterations nooesaary for the establishment of a picture show in tho Eastbourne Hall ' A report recommending an increase of 10s. per week to tho masters, engineers, and crews of the ferry steamrs was agreed
to. Advice was received from the Post and Telegraph Department that they wero not prepared to extend the telephone service to midnight, unless £100 per annum was paid The council decided to obtain the assistance of Mr. G. Mitchell, M.P., in getting the service extended.'-' For some time the oouncil has been carrying on the sanitary service at a loss, and it was decided to try to have the Act amended In order to permit of a larger rate being struck. , The council placed on record its regret at tlio Illness of Mr. 0. Bussell, a former member of tho council, and it was resolved to write him a letter of sympathy, expressing wishes for his speedy recovery. A report was received from , Dr. Fell Stating that there had been several cases of diphtheria in the borough. Dr. Fell added that in a number of houses which lie visited a most' insanitary state of affairs existed. Tho council resolved to ask tho Publio Health Department to mako a thorough inspection of the' borough.
