The Governor-General (Lord Liverpool) was entertained <it dinner by the senior officeis of tho Wellington military district last night, Brigadier-General C. W. Melvill, officer commanding the district, presided.

Captain Talui Rhodes, who was A.D.C. to the Governor-General, and the Hon. Mm. 11. Rhodes (a daughter of Lord Plunkct, a former Governor of New Zealand) left for England by tho Reinuera yesterday.

After forty-five years' service in. tho Post and Telegraph Department, Mr. G. B. Dull, Second Assistant Secretary, has retired on superannuation. Yesterday afternoon a pleasant gathering took place at the General Post Office when Mr. E. B. Morris, Secretary of the Department, received from the officers of his office two travelling.ruge and a razor, to mark tho occasion of , tho visit he is about to make as tho New Zealand delegate at the Postal Union Congress to be held at Madrid. The death occurred at Wangauiii on Wednesday of Mr. John Thomas Harrap in his 92nd year, a colonist well known in Christchureh! The late Mr. Harrnp, who of late years had resided in Wanganui, arrived at Lyttelton in ISliO in the ship William Miles and was the first lessee of what is now known as Hagley Park, Christchurch, which ho partly cleaved and drained. Later he was clerk and surveyor for many years to tho Spreydon and Halswell road ■ boards., Mr. Harrap was prc-deceased, by his wife ten years ago and two sons recently, the surviving members being Messrs. J. F. S. Harrap (Wellington), J. W. and P. Harrap (Christchurch), A. ,C. Harrap (Nelson), and Mesdames E; Triggs (Wellington), D'arcy Preston. G. Oldacre, James arid:.William Low, and Miss Harrap. The" members of \t&e. staff of the Vacuum Oil Company 1%., Ltd., met together at the Marine Engineers' Institute Hall on Tuesday evening to bid farewell to. Mr. W. H. Earnshaw, late Wellington manager, who is shortly severing his connection with tho company to take up a position in l'almerston North. During the evening Mr. A. G. Catc, New Zealand manager of the company, referred to Mr. Earnshaw'fi fourteen ■ years of service, and presented hiin on behalf of the staff with a- solid silver teapot and a case of silver-plated military hairbrushes, .suitably inscribed. The recipient, in a suitable reply, expressed the appreciation of Mrs. Earnshaw and himself. The early part of the evening was taken up" with musical items pleasingly rendered by Misses Griee and Lee, Messrs. Andrews, Craighead, Ponder aiid Gapes, and efficiently accompanied on .the piano by Miss Jopliu. After supper -the floor was cleared and dancing indulged in until midnight.

Mr. Bert Blnck. who was a member of the Black Family Concert Company, and was well known throughout • New Zealand, died recently in Sydney. Mr. Black was a native of Invercnrgill, «nd after his father retired he organised a company of his own. He continued in work until his death.

Mr.'J. S.-Barrett, president of tha Christchurch Federal Club, left on a trip to America by tho Maranm on Thursday.

Tho death occurred at Brookside, Canterbury, on Monday last of Mr. William Boag Cunningham, chairman of tho Ellesmero County Council, and a gentleman esteemed throughout tho province. He was a very successful breeder of Shorthorns, and in. 1911 ho was president of the Ellesmere A. and P. Association. Mr. Cunningham was forty-six years of age.

Tho Hon. Eileen-Hunker, daughter of lard and Lady Plunket, who has been staying in Cliristchurch for several months; left for England by the Eemuera yesterday. Mr. R, C. Bell, who hos been appointed associate professor of dentistry to the Dental School at Dunediu, was a'etudent at that school for many years, and distinguished himself, gaining/the special medal for operative dental surgery and for mechanical dentistry. He left Dunedin about 1914, and was in chaigo of the Chvistehurch Dental Hospital for a time, and afterwards practised privately. At present lie is. in.practice m Masterton. •, Mr. Maxwell Russel Holgate, M,A„ at present a teacher at King Edward Technical College, Dunedin, hast accepted a position on the staff of the Singapore High School at a commencing salary of .£•615 a vcar. Mr. Holgate, on attaining the age of 21 years in 1917. enlisted and left for Pranco as a sergeant-nia]or in the machine-gun section. He returned to Dunedin in 1919.
