LITTLE BOY DROWNED

tTNKNOWN BODY DURING SEARCH. By Telegraph—Special Correspondent. Palmerston N„ February 15. A. sad drowning fatality occurred on „ Saturday afternoon in the Manawatu River alongside the Palmerston North Esplanade; It appears that- several children were playing on a log alongside the river when a little boy aged seven, son of' Mr. W. Xelly, railway signalman. felt into the stream, and was auickly carried away, nr.d drowned beforo s help could be procured. A search by oonstables to-day resulted in the finding of the body about two hundred yards • down stream. Search for tlw child reunited in the finding, also, of the hotly of , a man.,. The constables were standing on the log, from which the child fell, and looking at the water, which was » about- eight .feet deep, when they saw what'looked like a man's hand at the bottom ,of the. hole. Constable Fergason immediately undressed and dived for the bodv. Whr-n recovered, the body, which had probably been in the water for three months, was found to be that of an unknown man, dressed in singlet, trousers, and boots. There is nothing to Identify the man, as nobody is known to bo .missing here. The body may have, come from the other sido of the ManawatiuGorge. . The police are making inouiries'in'that direction. The body is that'of-a middle-aged man, probably between' tO' and 50 years of age, of strong build". Gin. high. On the outside of the right forearm is tattooed tlw figure of a woman, standing on top of a clobe'of the world. The figure is holding a Union Jack in tho left hand, the end of the flag embracing the lower portion of the figure. There is a full-rig-ged ship on tho inner sido of the left forearm.
