POLICE AND CIVIL CASES.

Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., dealt.with tho police cases a!" the Magistrate's Court yesterday. John Flanagan pleaded guilty to charges of insobriety and of using' obscene language. Ou the first eharco ho was convicted and discharged, and for using the language was fined' -C 3, in defiuilt I! days' imprisonment. A fine of £b, in default one"month's imprisonment, was imposed on Thomas Mylctt, who pleaded guilty to a charge of committing an indecent act. For insobriety ho was made tho subject of a prohibition order. MILITARY DESERTER'S CLAIM. Thomas Bell, labourer, was non-suited in his claim for X 132 from Matthew Morrissey, farmer, of Huntly. Plaintiff said that he went into camp with the 24th Reinforcements, and after doing a few weeks' service ho deserted and went to Raetihi and took up employment on Mr. Morrissey's farm. Ho said that he told Morrissey he was a deserter and Morrissey employed him on fencing work for 11 months. Ho therefore claimed for the period of employment at tho rate of .£3 a week. After leaving the farm he came to Wellington, was arrested, and was sentenced to 110 davs' detention. Defendant said that he did not know that Bell was a deserter, but when he arrived Bell said that he was in trouble in Wellington and desired to keep clear i of the city for a while. Defendant did not want Bell on tho farm, but let him stay there for about a month. Morrissey discovered at the Raetihi sale that Bell was a deserter. His statement was supported by a neighbour named George M'Girr. Tho Magistrate (Mr. W. G. Riddell, 5.M..) said that the plaintiff had failed to nrovc his ease. ' Mr. W. G. Mellish appeared for plaintiff and Mr. P. W. Jackson for defendant.

JFNDEFENDED CIVIL ACTIONS. Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., gave judgment for plaintiff by default in the following undefended cases: Wellington Gas Co. v. Henry Campion, XI 13s. 6d„ costs 10s.; same v. E. JUDGMENT SUMMONS. A .T. M'T'ike was ordered to pay G. H. Tiller the sum of £1 Gs. Gd. by February 2G or go to gaol for a week.
