SEAMEN'S WAGES

THE TENTATIVE AGREEMENT

BASED ON AUSTRALIAN RATES. By Telegraph-Frees Association. Dunedin, February 12. It is understood that tho wages embodied in the new seamen's agreement are based on the Australian rates, as follows: —A.8., XU per calendar month; A.8., employed as iamptrimmer, .£ls; 0.5., under IS years, J:8; over IS, X 9 lis.; boatswain, Xl,'i; trimmer, .£l4; Greaser or fireman, XIC; lireman greaser (on vessels carrying one engineer only), dIG 10s.; donkeyniiUii ,£l7; storekeeper, iIG. It wa9 reported yesterday tliat tho draft agreement prepared' by ■ the conference that considered the-demands or tho Seamen's Union had-'been endorsed by tho local brandies of tho union in Auckland, Wellington, and DuHcdin. A meeting of seamen was to bo held in Lvtlelton last night. ... If tho new agreement is accepted oy all tho brandies of tho union, it will come into operation, as far as the increased rates of wages and overtime payments are concerned, as from January 1 last. The'other conditions embodied in tho agreement will come into operation nest month.
