PICNICS

« Glorious weather prevailed for the annual combined picnic of the staffs of tho Public Works and Mines Departments at Day's Bay. The Hon. W. Fraser, Minister of Public Works, was unable to be present, being then in Dunedin. Mr. W. S. Short, retiring Under-Secretary for Public Works, and Mr. A. H. Kimbell,' Under-Secretary for Mines, were both present and, with officers and their friends, spent an enjoyable day. The forenoon was devoted chiefly to the entertainment of tho children present. After lunch sports were held, which were most keenly contested. The following are the results:— 100 Yards Departmental Championship: Smith, 1; Paton, 2. Ois&vette race (75yds.): Miss Price and Smith, 1; jMiss Taylor and Rothwell. 2. "Old-timers' race: M'Kenzie. 1; Brace, 2. Relay race (220 yds.): Sniewle, Pound, Thompson, Price. Egg and spoon race: Miss Rose, 1: Miss Wilson, 2. Ladies' Miss MDayitt. 1; Miss Longley, 2. 'Threelegged race: Miss Dempster and Mr. Woolcott and Miss J.eyland and MlCay (dead heatt. Wheelbarrow race (combined): Miss Rowe and Sutherland. 1. Wheelbarrow race:' Rothwell and MilJar, 1; Burn nud Thorne, 2. -MO Yards championship: Smellie, ]; Paton, 2. 4-tQ.-yards, cadets: Taylor, 1; Haines, 2. Diggers' 100 yds.: Harris, 1: Thompson, 2. ladies' swimming, 75yds.: Miss Price. Men's swimming, 75yds.: Mr. Bell. Ladies' nail-driving competition: Mrs. Sinclair. On Saturday a big muster of A. J. Coleman's tailoring staff and friends gathered at Day's Thy to celebrate their annual picnic. Tho proceedings, which went off merrily, were entered into enthusiastically bv all present, and a highly enjoyable day was spent. The races proved q big attraction. Among the successful competitors were "Misses Fuller (two events), Austin (two events), Hodson, M'Carlhy, M'Grath. Ksilwood, Anderson; Messrs. Eberhardt, Welch, Winter and Murphy.
