At Tuesday's meeting of tho Masterton Borough Council, the following extract from the January report of tho gasworks was the subject of comment:— "A notification was received that as from January 1G the price of Westport coal lias been increased by 2s. Id. per ton. Coal received for the month was short of requirements by nearly 200 tons. The position now is that all reserve stocka of coal arc quite exhausted, and tho works entirely dependent upon coal roceived from week to week. The Mayor and the gas manager interviewed tho Coal Controller in Wellington, when the position was fully d:scussed. Tho best that, can bo looked for is that tho gasworks requirements will lie kept supplied from week to week until tho position in regard to the amount cf coal coming forward from tho West Co.ist mines improves considerably. Further, it is almost certain that a proportion of Newcastle coal will have to be taken up frb.n time to time to make v.p any shortages of New Zealand coal." In this connection tho gas manager again urged that representations be niado to tho -New Zealand Government as to the unfair position in which inland gasworks and other, usors of Newcastle coal are placed by tho penal freight charged on New South Wales coal by the Railway Department —some 3s. per ton on the comparatively short mileage from Wellington to Masterton. The Mayor (Mr. W. H. .lack-on) suggested that the Government should be'fortimlly approached to take, steps to alleviate the present acute position. Tlio supply of coal in stock was suiiicient only for immediate requirements. Councillor Candy, however, was of the opinion that Government interference would (illy cause a rise in railway freight. Eventual!'l' it <lcc : ded to fake no action. The inaugural "run" under the auspices of the proposed Fcalhvrslon Amateur Athletic Club was very successful.
