» TWO COMMISSIONERS APPOINTED. It is announced thai; two Trade Commissioners. Messrs. George Elliot (Auckland) and H. W. Pearson (Timaru) will proceed with the Parliamentary party to Samoa. They have been appointed by the Government lo investigate the trade of tho islands, with the special object of suggesting methods of expanding the trade between New Zealand 011 the one hand and Sn 1110:1. Fiji and other islands on the other hand. They will study the situation for themselves and will aho confer with representatives of the Administrations in Samoa and Fiji. It is generally reeoenised that New Zealand's trade'with the islands of the Pacific has been seriously hampered Hi recent years by the shortage of shipping, and this factor, mav account to a large extent for the decline that has been reported. But there are other factors at work, and the commissioners will attempt to cither all the information that is available. They will innuire into the fruit trade, with special reference to shipping difficulties, and will soo bow far the failure of Now Zealand to provide a market for copra hampers trade with the Dominion. Some copra used to ennie to New Zealand for re-export, hut Ihe shipping shortage interfered seriously with this trade.
