THEFT FROM AN HOTEL ACCUSED SENT TO GAOL Bv no means ft first offender, William Murphy again appeared before Mr. E. race. S.M., at the Magistrate's Court yesterday to ar.swcr charges of theft and of druukonncss. Sub-Inspector Emerson stated that somt) time on Saturday afternoon Ellen Greenwood, cook, employed at the Albion Hotel, saw the accused leaving her room at tho hotel, and she subsequently missed a sum of lfls., a silk scarf valued at 255., n pair of spectacles valued at 253., and a Twir of scissors valued at 4s. Cd. Miss Greenwood informed tho licensee, and tho Moused was chased down Taranakl Street over a fence, and on to Taranaki Street Wharf, where ho was subsequently arrested bv Constable Scarry, -when searched was found to havo in his possession the articles mentioned in the information. Tho accused said that ho could not remember anything nbont the offence, and stated that ho had been drinking heavily. In view of his "list" included a chanro of theft barely two months old. His Worship sont the accused to gaol for two months. Murphy was merely convicted on tho charge of drunkenness.

OTHER CHAKGES. Tames Kelly, ft sailor on tho liner Paknha. was fined .S2 for obstructing Police Constable Reginald Hollis. On Saturday tho constable was endeavouring to .arrest a woman/for drunkenness when tho -accused interfered, and became so annoying that he had to bo arrested. As the steamer to which ho belonged was leaving Wellington on Sunday the accused was bailed out in the sum of £2. Eight first offenders foi drunkenness wero leniently dealt with. MAINTENANCE CASES. John Borne Bayliss was ordered to pay the sum of 15s. per week in support of his illegitimate child, and was also ordered to find a surety of .£2O. The evidence showed that tho defendant had supported tho child for thirteen years, and the surety was applied for as plaintiff alleged Hint defendant was about-to leave for England to get married'. This Bayliss denied. Edwin Gordon Eden was ordered to pay 355. per week towards the maintenance of his wife, and to pay .£25 past maintenance. Ellis, whose arrears in resnect of a maintenance order amounted to £2 ss. 9d.. was sentenced to one month's imprisonment, warrant to bo suspended for one month. James Henry Burns, whose arrears in resnect of a maintenance order amounted to ,£l2. was sentenced to one month's imprisonment, warrant to be suspended so lonsr as tho current payments- are maintained and ss. per week is paid off the arrears. Alexander Clifford James Welsh was made the subject of maintenance, separation and Ruardianship orders, and was ordered to pav 20s. per wpek towards the support of his wife. William WrK'ht was made the .'subject of similar orders and was ordered to contribute 35s per week in support of his wife.
