TEACHERS IN THE ARMY

EXTRA PAYMENT TO OFFICERS TO STOP.

In the early months of the war, when the New Zealand Expeditionary Force was being mobilised, it was thought highly desirable to induce educated men to accept commissions in tho Force. To this end it was decided to offer to teachers appointed to commissions oertain moneys in addition to military pay, to make their income on active service up to 25 per cent, more than their peace-time paj as teachers.. No such concession was made to teachers who were not fortunate enough to qualify for It was very soon recognised that this concession created an anomaly, No such payment was given to other Civil Servants or' to other educated men going into the Force. The Government has uow decided that this extra payment to school teachers holding commissions shall bo discontinued after December 31. Tho agreement made with the men now on service will not he broken. They will still get the money promised to them, but in future teachers who obtain commissions will bo entitled to no moneys to supplement their military pay.
