LORD LANDSOWNE'S LETTER

THE POLITICAL SENSATION OF THE HOUR DIVERGENT VIEWPOINTS (Rec. November 30, 8.20 p.m.) London, November -20. Importance' is attached to the Mar quis of Lansdowne's letter,- in view of the opening of the War Conference at Paris, and a question lias already been addressed to the Government. It is expected that Mr. Bonar Law will speedily define tho Government's attitude. The evening "papers give prominence to the letter. Criticisms on the one hand describe it as a sober and courageous. declaration, and on the other as a formidable attack on Mr.. Lloyd George's policy and ill-timed in view oi the recent German success in Italy and the Russian armistice. The "Pall Mall Gazotto" says: "Public opinion will differ from the Marquis of Lansdowne's assumption that Germany is disposed to' any. kind of peace which would be tolerable to free civilised peoples."—Aus.-N.Z.' The-Marquis of'Lansdowne's letter is the political sensation of the hour. There is uneasiness in tho lobbies concerning a; possible influential backing, but there 1 - is overwhelming opinion against Lord Lansdowne. The Liberal papers approve the opinions about future guarantees, but are non-commit-tal concerning Lord Lansdowne's tendency to whittle down the Allies' offi-cially-declared minimum terms. The "Evening News" says: "Tho Marquis of Lansdowne's belief in Ger•many's signature is pathetic. Talking to the tiger is a sheer waste of time." —United Service.
