■ REPORT ON TEE EFFORT.' A. meeting of the War Funds Collecting Committee wa.-> held last evening. Tho Mayor presided.

A balance-sheet, which is covered by the following report, was presented lo the meeting:—"The 'Our Day' Eed Cross Appeal and Blind Soldiers' and Sailors' Fund collections linve resulted in X'B93t !)s. sd. boiug collected, as against i:6366 Inst year. An amount of ,£2750 has been donated lo the 'Our Day' appeal by the lady workers of the Red Cross Shop, and has been paid direct to the treasurer of the Eed Cross Fund. This umount, together with an amount of j>Boo which has been collected in the Hntt Valley, will make a total for. the Wellington city and suburbs of over .£12,400. This great effort has been brought about by the magnificent manner in which the ladies of Wellington and all concerned have worked on behalf of the fund. The expenses this year, as you will note, show ,in increase of .£255, the total amount being MM, as against X 275 last year. This is accounted for by the fact that owing to the difficulty on account of the times in obtaining money in large sums, your committee set ou.t to obtain moneys by the aid of entertainments, a Paddy's Market, surprise packete, etc. This necessitated a large increase of expense in advertising, stationery, etc., the amount under this heading being .C2BO, nearly half the total expenses, as against.£l22 last year. Another item of expense, viz., X 37 165., was spent in the purchase, of suitable, collection boxen, which now become the property of the War Funds Collecting Committee, and will be available for any future collections. This appeal your committee considers very satisfactory, considering the many call's which (here ire upon the public at the prese.nl time. Ihe public can rest assured that the money subscribed will be all used for the alleviation of the suffering of the sick and wounded soldiers and sailors, who are doing so much for us." The balance-sheet was adopted. (
