A DOUBLE BALLOT

15,000 NAMES FOR 34th AND 35th REINFORCEMENTS When voluntary recruiting for the Thirty-fourth ami the Thirty-fifth Keinforcemeuts was closed, it was found that there was a shortage of 3731 men to be madu up. Tho deficiency iu tiie Thirtyfourths was 1524, and in tho Thiny-fiftiis 2207. 'For the Thirty-fourths there were 781 volunteers, and for thu Thirty-fifths 14i. The explanation of tho great difference between the numbers of volunteers for the two drafts is that before the Thirty-fifths wero enrolled voluntary iecruiting of single men over twenty years of age was stopped.

1 he ballot to secure the balance of the men. required for the two drafts was commenced by tho Government Statistician (Mr. Malcolm I'Yaser), under the supervision of Mr. S. E. M'Carthy, S.M., yesterday morning. To provide the 3731 men, 15,000 aro being balloted—a proportion of four balloted men to one soldier. When theso 15.CC0 names are removed from the roll about SOOO will remsiin. Hie remainder number about sufficient to obtain a single draft's deficiencies from, so there may be no need to ballot next month; the remaining name 3 may be gazetted without a "draw." It is expected that the present ballot will bo completed to-morrow, and that the Gazette containing the names will be issued on September 1.
