MILITARY DESERTERS' LIST
e I AN ERROR OF THE DEFENCE DEPARTMENT. In tho Gazette lists of military desertera recently published, tho name of lieutenant H. H. Godfrey, by an error on tho part of the Defence authorities, appeared amongst tho defaulters. Lieutenant Godfrey's father, Mr. W. It. Godfrey, of Wnimna, Eketahunu, wrote to tho Defence Minister (Sir James Allen) about ■the matter, and has since received tho following reply: "I have received your letter of July 0 with reference to tho publication of tho name of your eon, Lieutenant H. H. Godfrey, in tho Gazette lists under Section 13 of tho Military Sen-ice Act. I have made inquiries, and find that tho publication was duo to an error on tho part of tho Defence authorities. I wish to express to you my very sincere regret at tho pain and annoyance that you have been caused. I would like to assure you that the very greatest c»to ie taken to avoid mistakes of this kind, but it eeems impossible to prevent some errors in dealing with the many thousands of names involved. I have given instructions that this mistako is to be corrected in the next issue of tho (Gazette. "(Sgd.) J. ALLEN.".
