Gould, assistant master at the Hritt District High School, has been, appointed an assistant inspector in tho Wellington district. ■ At a meeting of the Wellington Recess Committee of the Senate of the Uniyersi{y of New .Zealarid. Mr. F. H. Dawn was appointed temporary assistant registrar during the abensenco of Mr. T. G. Comrie, who has been passed for active service. Mr. Dawn left the literary staff of the "Lyttelton Times" to gain further experience in England, and on the outbreak of war joined tho British section of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in September, 1914,. in which, after serving six months in Egypt, he was in. the fighting on GalJipoli. .He was invalided to England, and on being discharged from the Army returned to New Zealand in April last. Mr. Dawn is an undergraduate of the University, having been a student at Victoria, TJni-. versity College. 9 s The death occurred at Timaru yesterday morning of one of lnvercargill's most prominent citizens, in the person •of Mr. James Erskine Watson, who was widely known throughout the Dominion, says a Press Association message from Invercargill. , Mr. Watson was a member of most of lnvercargill's local bodies, and served the Dominion on the Snmner Canal Commission, and the Auckland' Waterways Commission. He had many friends, in the Territorial Force, in which he- -held the rank of lieutenant-colonel. His death at the comparatively early age of fifty-four years is deeply regretted.' .-

Private G. I. Bridge, who is reported killed .in action, was the eldest spn of Mr. J. W. Bridge, dentist, of Wellington. He left with the Nineteenth Reinforcements as a sergeant, but on' arrival in England became attached to the dental department established behind the firing-line. Last week a letter was received from him stating that he intended joining the fighting forces. Evidently this is what he had done, as the news of'his death in action, is the first intimation. He was educated at St. Patrick's College and at Nelson College. Later he studied dentistry, passed his examination, and started practice in Wanganui. Last year, on learning that his brother had been wounded at Gallipoli, he closed his 6urgery and enlisted. He was an enthusiastic, all-round athlete, a member of the Wellington Football (Rugby) Club, and a member of the Wanganui Cricket . Club and Swimming -. Club. The Hntt Road Board on Monday adopted a motion expressing sympathy with Mr. ,T. W. M'Ewau (Mayor of Petone) in the loss of his son in France. Mrs. G. E. Jones, of Terrace Gardens, > has received information that her sou, Lieutenant Lance F. Jones, has been promoted captain. This young officer, who lias only just turned twenty-three years of age, is second in command of the Canterbury Infantry Battalion; and left New Zealand with the Seventh Reinforcements. He is noiv in ,Flanders, where he lias been for some considerable time.. His many friends will lie pleased to hear he was quite well at .the time of writing. :

A Press Association cablegram records the death of Lieutenant Alan Bailey (killed in action), son of Mr. J. W. Bailey, of, Dominion Road, Auckland. Deceased was the .first of three brothers to enlist, and served in Egypt with the artillery for-some time. From there he went to England, where he gained his commission in the East Lancashire;' Fiold Artillery, and has been on active service in Franoe ever since. This is the second son who has been killed in action, news having been' received some time ago of the death of Corporal Harry Bailey, 'while another son, Lieut. Arthur Bailey, also on active service, was badly gassed, and invalided homo. A fourth son tried to enlist, but was rejected as medically unfit. He is now serving on one of the boats trading to the Old Country, as a marine engineer.

Yesterday the Wellington Education Board.heartily congratulated Mr. F. H. Bakewell on his appointment as chief inspector in tho Wellington education district. The chairman added that tho ward had every reason to congratulate itself also ou so good an appointment. When replying, Mr. Bakewell remarked that thirty-five years ago he had beeu in tho servico of the Marlborough Board, which was now joineTT with Wellington.

Mr. C. Ferguson lias been reappointed a representative of tho Wellington Education Board on tho Marlborough* High School Board.

Sergeant Alonzo P. Divan, of Wellington, who went away as signal sergeant willi tTio 3rd Battalion N.Z.R.8., has cabled from France saying ho had gono through the big bnttlo safely, and was well. Sergeant Divan has been in tho tiring lino since tho Now Zealanders landed in France, and took part in the big pushes on tho Somme and Mcssiues.
